Jason Simpson - Cage Fighter:
"Chris Turnbull's vast knowledge is reflected in his ability as a real world self defence/fight instructor, especially as a doorman of which Chris has 16 years experience.
Having trained with Chris on many occasions and worked with him in many licensed premises in and around Edinburgh, I would have no hesitation in reccommending him as an excellent instructor in reality based street defence and adrenalin/fear control.
Chris has and does still work in the close protection sector giving him what i believe to be a better all round understanding of how and what techniques to teach and advise his students/clients for any given situation.
Chris is undoubtedly a professional instructor of which i would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending to anyone wishing to learn from to further their street combat/defence skills or to employ in a professional capacity to look after any aspect of their business or personal security."

"I have known Chris for a good few years now! I first met him when I worked with him doing Security and Protection work in Edinburgh. He's a pretty sound bloke and considering he's done Security for over 15yrs now, the guy knows his stuff what the protection industry's all about. I've been out to a few of his fights and trained with him for a good few years… He's a strong lad with some good explosive punching power!! His ground work is formidable and his stand-up is still very explosive and sharp!!"

"I have known Chris for a few years now and have trained with him on several occasions.
Being an MMA practitioner, a lot of our
skills are transferable to street self-defence however Chris teaches these techniques in a ‘real confrontation’ scenario.
I have never worked alongside Chris in the security industry but have trained with him in various MMA sessions that include stand up striking and more importantly, submission grappling and wrestling. It is these techniques that Chris teaches in a real street self defence situation.
Being a professional MMA/cagefighter and British Middleweight Champion, I can vouch that Chris has the knowledge and ability to
pass on the techniques/skills necessary to survive on the streets and see the ‘danger’ signs that can help avoid danger or
confrontation.
Chris's system is the 'real deal' and if its street stuff your looking for, go and check him out!"

I have known Chris for only 2 years but in that time his knowledge of, and ability in, REAL WORLD SITUATIONS has impressed me greatly. Having myself worked as a soldier, doorman, police officer and close protection officer i have undertaken various training courses aimed at restraint, arrest, and self preservation. The common denominating factor in ALMOST all of these courses was that the techniques required LOTS of practice and assumed that the student is calm prior to, and during, violent confrontations.
Any one with even half a brain knows that unless you work in an arena where violent confrontations are commonplace then these courses are simply unrealistic and a waste of time.
Chris has 17 years of experience of real life confrontations due to his work as a door supervisor. He also has 3 years experience of mixed martial arts (MMA) MMA being in my opinion, the closest legal form of ‘real’ fighting.
I haven’t worked directly with Chris but i have trained with him (and learned from him!) and not only is his knowledge and ability sound, but he also has the ability to pass that knowledge on, and the experience to know that what he teaches works! The latter being something many ‘instructors’ are lacking!
One word of advice though, if you are looking for someone to give you a false sense of achievement/security, or to blow smoke up your arse, Chris is not the instructor for you!

Giving you an insight to Chris Turnbulls' character is a very straight forward one for me. I've known Chris for 15 years + we first met training in a gym in Edinburgh and over a number of conversations and years we'd meet up post weights workouts to train heavy bag and pad work together. My emphasis was always on hitting as hard as I could; always striving to destroy an opponent with one brutally hard technique. Chris's on the other hand was on how to deliver a technique through the sneakiest way possible on a unsuspecting thug or door arsehole. This made a great combination and over many years, Chris and I had some brilliant workouts and many conversations about training and tales from the doors; which always involved fights and situations that were resolved using your brain not always brawn.
Chris and I also worked the doors together ( as bouncers if you want. ) Ive seen him doing his stuff and he's seen me doing my stuff. The fighting part is neither here nor there. Trust and knowing the person you work with, is solid in character is an inperitive part of working security. Chris is solid in character and trustworthy with out question. Chris has covered my back a few times and my memories cant be bad as Ive got a smile on my face as I type this. I never dowted for a minute that he wouldnt be there.
As someone whos trained many people over two decades; Ive learned that its not just ability that makes you a teacher, many martial artists have ability but not much else. You have to have personality, you have to make people beleive the path they are picking is a right and proper path to follow; for them. You also have to have the ability to make students enthusiastic and open minded towards other martial ways; as a good MMA fighter will always learn new ways to get the edge on your opponent; whether on a mat or the pavement. Chris has this quality of character.
I know Chris might have wanted me to write more but he forgets he's a close friend as well
More to come soon!...
